With the ever-growing online marketing need for businesses, the demand for quality stock photography grows year on year. And whilst the traditional stock photography sites are still widely used, the more people need stock images, the more you may come across the same photos time and time again, and if you’re sick of seeing them, chances are your audience are too!
So whilst we’re already into 2021 and finding our feet, I wanted to share with you the stock photography trends I’m seeing for this year, many of which started and are growing off the back of 2020.

Not at all surprising really that home living has been a growing stock photo trend, with a large proportion of last year being spent in lock-down and restrictions being in place, we’ve spent an awful lot of time at home. Images showing that home life such as weekend brunches have been on the increase, and this includes anything that nods towards working from home.
Mental health and well-being topics and conversations have also seen an increase, I think the past 12 months have focused the mind on ensuring that we are not just physically healthy but mentally healthy as well. Taking time to look after ourselves and being kind to ourselves is being reflected in our marketing. Brand messages of creating balance, of defining your own version of success mean that images reflecting a slower pace or morning routine are set to be more popular as the year goes on, especially as we transition out of the pandemic and into whatever the new way of life will be.
The humble walk, wow have these gotten popular with-it being people’s only change in scenery from their homes this last year. So again, nature stock photos have seen an increase, across the seasons! From blossom photos as we come into spring, to the gorgeous autumnal leaves we saw being snapped up last autumn. Our appreciation of being outside will continue into 2021 and so sprinkling some nature through your social media as a way to show what you’re up to on a weekend, or for a brisk morning wake-up walk is a great way to start conversations with your audience.

I know this is something that many people are craving right now, to jet off and explore new places. So, travel stock images will definitely see an increase from last year. Travel stock photos last year were use to wistfully look back on favourite travel destinations, and as we head towards the hopeful end of these restrictions, they are being used to get excited about plans of travel, again sparking conversations and engagement in your social media posts.
Now, 2020 may have seen the rise in home baking, in particular, banana bread (yuck, not for me!) the new year always brings goals and talk of a healthier lifestyle. And I’m seeing more and more freebies, advice and opt-ins regarding how you can achieve this – from honouring the simple ingredients through to smoothie and juice recipes and at home workouts.
The completely white background flat lay photos are becoming less popular it feels among entrepreneurs, but the flat lay image is still strong. This time though people are opting for a slightly less clinical look to their flat-lay stock photos, with textures and actual work surface looking backgrounds.
The ability to add text to stock images is a big marketing win for many business owners, be that for opt ins, sales pages, email headers or social media. Having the space to add text to an image is really powerful for your marketing, and means that those images are working even harder for your business, so definitely a stock photo trend we will see grow I imagine.
