A couple of weeks ago I had the absolute delight of travelling to Croatia to photograph Lisa Johnson’s Destination Inspiration Retreat with a fabulous group of inspirational business owners. Today I’m sharing one of those fabulous individuals…. Chantelle from Choice Words who is one of the smiliest and bubbliest personalities I’ve come across. Our shoot may have only been 15 minutes but it was such a giggle, so here’s some of the images from the shoot and a bit more about Chantelle for you to get to know her, the fluff free copywriter and coach…
“I tend to get self conscious, so I had to get myself in the zone to make the most of our time together. I focused on what I wanted the outcome to be, and you made me feel so comfortable from the get go!”
“I loved doing the pool splashing shots. I had a vision of these fun, personality filled shots to capture my new, more authentic branding and I couldn’t have imagined they’d come out so perfectly!
Amanda will make you feel like a model. She’s super professional, calm and gave clear direction to get the shots! I can’t wait to share the rest in my next launch!”
What first got you into your field?
I’ve always loved writing and studied English Literature at uni, but I worked in corporate sales for 7 years before I got brave enough to start my own copywriting business. It combined my talent for writing with my sales experience, and I knew I had a knack for capturing other people’s voices as I’ve been ghost writing for my Dad’s business since I was 14!
What’s your favourite thing about the work that you do?
I love helping brilliant, passionate business owners articulate what makes them awesome! So many people are amazing at what they do, but utterly terrible at pitching themselves, or communicating their value. I get to dig into the core of what makes people tick, why they do what they do, and how they’re making the world a better place, and then help them shout about it. That’s a real privilege.
What is a ‘reality’ of your work that other people don’t realise?
A LOT of staring out of windows, at blank pages and into coffee mugs goes into crafting high-converting copy. People see the 30 minutes it took you to write something, not the cogs whirring for hours and hours in the background. Creativity isn’t a tap you can turn on and off, and when I see my students in my copywriting courses trying to book in writing work 6-8 hours a day I wince. You need space to make magic!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? (can be on anything!)
Clear is kind. It’s a Brene Brown quotation and it perfectly sums up the key to writing great sales copy in your business. People don’t want to need a decipher code to work out what you do or how they can work with you. Keep it concise, use simple language everyone can understand, and for god’s sake call them to action!
What’s your cocktail / mocktail of choice?
Margarita, with a decent mescal. Salt on the rim, thank you please!
