I love working on a Hair and Makeup Artist Brand Shoot. HMUAs are always so clear on how they want to present themselves through their branding due to the nature of their work – seeing a person and how they want to be viewed is part of brand photography too!
Hair and Makeup Artist Alice booked her Brand Shoot as part of my Shoot House Tour, where I book out spectacular shoot houses for the full day so you can secure a 90 min band shoot to showcase your business. My 2025 tour is now over but I will be sharing my 2026 tour very soon. In the meantime, you can see the 2025 tour info here.
So, I would love you to meet Alice of Lucent Hair and Makeup…
As a creative person with a Fine Art degree, I always knew I wanted to do something hands-on. I was drawn to the artistry of makeup and hairstyling, but what truly captivated me was the way hair and makeup could be so transformative – not by masking or changing someone’s features, but by boosting their confidence and making them feel beautiful in their own skin. That’s why I love working with brides – helping them feel truly confident and radiant on their special day is incredibly rewarding!
One of the things I love most about my work is the variety it brings – meeting new people and forming amazing connections all the time. It’s also incredibly rewarding to help someone feel more confident and beautiful using my skills, products, and tools. I have more recently developed a passion for teaching, whether it’s helping women feel more confident in doing their own makeup or guiding other hair and makeup artists to refine their craft. Watching others grow through my guidance brings me so much joy and fulfilment!
A reality of being a hair and makeup artist that people don’t often see is that it’s not just about creating beautiful looks, it’s also about running a business. Alongside all the creative stuff, there’s a lot of admin, marketing, accounting, and everything else that comes with being freelance. These are skills I’ve had to learn along the way, and juggling it all can be a real challenge! It’s a real balance of both artistry and business management.
The best advice I’ve received is to stop thinking about it and just do it! As a naturally cautious person, I used to spend a lot of time weighing up every decision and overthinking things. But running my own business has taught me that sometimes you just have to dive in and take action. Even if things don’t go perfectly, the experience always teaches you something valuable for the future!
Hard to pick just one, so I’ll say two…! An Espresso Martini for weekend brunch times, or a Manhattan when I’m feeling a bit more sophisticated!
And now, lets hear about her experience of the shoot…
My biggest worry was how I’d feel being on the other side of the camera. While I had worked with you before doing hair and makeup for your clients, I wasn’t sure how relaxed I’d feel being photographed myself. I was a bit concerned about looking “stiff” in the images, but I’m so pleased with how natural and effortless they turned out! You made the whole experience really comfortable.
Capturing lots of variety. We had a clear plan to showcase different aspects of my business, and the beautiful shoot house gave us lots of options to work with. Having everything pre-planned made the process easier, and it all came together nicely!
I’d tell them how lovely, warm, and relaxed you are to work with, and how comfortable they would feel being photographed by you!
The shoot images have been a fantastic asset for my brand and business. I’ve already updated my website with them and am gradually incorporating them into my social media marketing. The response has been really positive, and they’ve provided me with a wealth of marketing material to showcase my work!
