What colour should I wear to my brand shoot?

Shoot Advice

I get asked a lot if there is a colour that someone should wear to their brand shoot, and my top 3 tops on what colour to wear is as follows:

  • Wear colours that you know suit you – if you don’t know what suits you, then I would recommend working with a stylist to help with that as they will be able to advise based on your skin tones, hair, eyes, body shape, personality – they’ll work their magic and it’s a really great investment in yourself
  • Wear colours that you feel confident in – this is linked with wearing something that suits you, but if you have a favourite outfit, then bring it, as it’s going to make a huge difference in how you feel in front of the camera
  • Wear colours that complement your brand aesthetic – now I’m not saying that you should match your brand colours, in fact you don’t want to blend in completely into your website so that you look just like a floating head!  But you also don’t want to be clashing with anything you’re going to be putting out there in your brand.

Now, I very much think of things in Seasons (like my Seasonal Edit), and in colour psychology, colours fall into seasons too, so I’m going to group together some colour inspiration loosely aligned with these seasons and how my clients have shown up in those colours for their shoot.

Spring colours for your brand shoot

With spring you immediately think of nature coming back out to bloom after the winter, it’s youthful and conjures up thoughts of yellow and green.  Spring colours are often associated with inspirational and approachable brands and yellow is especially often used in PR and communication brands.

Summer colours for your brand shoot

For summer, colours can be both bold and delicate – pinks can be hot or romantic, blues can be deep navy and purples mimicking fragrant lavender.  These colours are representative of clear skies on sunny days and gorgeous flowers.  These colours are often attributed to creative brands, but also elegance, chic and efficient – a real mix!

What you may notice, is Shelly is wearing a blue Christmas jumper (winter content marketing) we did actually shoot this in summer but the image at least shows the depth of blue that can be used as a summer colour.

Autumnal colours for your brand shoot

Autumn automatically makes me think of pumpkin spiced lattes, bobble hats, cosy jumpers and gorgeous leaves turning colour, so it’s no wonder that the colours associated with autumn are oranges, red and browns/tans.  Autumnal brand colours are seen as warm, earthy, organic but also authentic and passionate.  Be careful though with red, as it can also make people think of Christmas so it slips into winter season from a content marketing perspective!

Winter colours for your brand shoot

Winter as a season can be synonymous with cool and iciness, so black and white only feature in winter seasons.  However, from a brand aesthetic it is attributed with strength and luxury as well as being decisive and an expert.

Remember the advice above though, wear those colours you feel AMAZING in, for that will show through tenfold in front of the camera as that confidence will shine through.
